1975 Ducati 860 GT for sale

1975 Ducati 860 GT for sale is a very rare sight today as they produced very few over the years. This model was the one Ducati used to deliver the new square case motor to the world in 1974. The GT860 was also there to take over from round case GT750, which is probably one of the best and most comfortable road motorcycles ever produced. As a motorcycle, in its own right is succeeded and delivered, however in reality, it was an ugly duckling and yet holds a highly significant place in motorcycling history. See the long description for more detail.

The entire story about these very rare bevel drives can be further explained here. What is not mentioned is that Leopoldo Tartarini had a hand in the design that was heavily interfered with by the the new head of Ducati sponsored by the state, De Eccher and designer of the VW Golf, Giorgio Giugiaro who also designed the Maserati Ghibli. There was only one of Tartarini and two of De Eccher and Giugiaro who were backed by the Italian government. This motorcycle does hold a fascinating place in Ducati’s history and is a bevel driven motor. There will never be a time again in motorcycling history when motorcycles like this are manufactured again, as you can see in my interview with Ian Falloon here (watch interview 1).

Original Ducati GT860

This particular example is only showing 1800 miles, but the clock is no longer adding miles. The motor has been checked by us and is clearly low mileage and the motorcycle is very original indeed and in incredible condition. This is the 860 GTE with electric start, which makes it perfect for touring. It rides beautifully and everything works perfectly with Conti exhausts, which were a very expensive extra. The motorcycle is still showing the UK supplying dealer’s riveted plaque on the rear mudguard from the Romford dealer Gander and Gray.  There were complaints of ill-handling due to the high handlebars and I’ve noticed nothing of the type between 80 and 100 MPH. This is a highly original motorcycle, but they never made them in this 1978 black and gold Ducati 900SS. This motorcycle was originally blue and silver, however the owner went back to Gander and Gray when the machine was two years old and asked them to have the machine resprayed in black and gold. The original paint can be seen if examined very carefully underneath the tank. We are happy to supply the motorcycle as is or resprayed in its original livery at extra cost. A lot of parts from the Darmah and 900SS are interchangeable so these were great machines to customise to make look like a 900SS.

Great value bevel drives

As a motorcycle, these are great value bevel drives and a great touring motorcycle that has been overlooked. They are highly versatile motorcycles to ride for very long distances and remain highly reliable and low maintenance. This model did not have the needy Desmodromic valves of the 900SS, they use simple tappets. It still delivers 60 BHP, so it’s no slouch, but it’s clearly not a stressed motor in any way. Due to the incredible bevel drive set up of these motors, these rev out to 8,000 RPM- for an 860cc V twin! This motorcycle is a perfect replacement for the iconic GT750, however they did get the styling wrong. As a motorcycle in it’s own right, except for the styling, it is a superb and highly under-valued classic motorcycle. This is a future classic Italian motorcycle that will certainly deliver great profits, as they offer such great value.

Good value classic Italian motorcycle

The Ducati GT860 is a good value classic Italian motorcycle that will definitely deliver great profits and immense joy. This is a great classic motorcycle investment, is wonderful to own, ride and can easily and inexpensively be customised, while keeping all of the original parts. This model did not sell well and is a very rare Ducati which also offers a great price point tat o enter classic motorcycle investment. Classic motorcycles like this do not stay at this price point for long, so here’s an opportunity to buy a stunning Ducati classic motorcycle.
